Champagne Moët & Chandon - Réserve Impériale - Magnum
Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, the Moët & Chandon house has held a major place in the history of Champagne for nearly three centuries. Located in Épernay, on the prestigious Avenue de Champagne, it has built its reputation on remarkable blending expertise and a deep knowledge of the various Champagne terroirs. Its vast vineyard heritage, spread across the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, and the Côte des Blancs, allows it to work with an exceptional diversity of crus and aromatic profiles. This richness forms the foundation of a recognizable style, combining generosity of fruit, freshness, and maturity. Introduced in 1996, the Réserve Impériale offers a more vinous and structured interpretation of the house's identity, giving a privileged place to Pinot Noir. Less known than the emblematic Brut Impérial, it stands out with a fleshier expression and a depth that gives it a true gastronomic dimension. Presented here in a 150 cl magnum, it benefits from a format particularly suited to the harmonious evolution of champagnes and great occasions.
The Réserve Impériale is based on a blend dominated by Pinot Noir, which generally represents 40 to 50% of the composition, complemented by 20 to 30% Meunier and 20 to 30% Chardonnay. This predominance of Pinot Noir brings a strong structure, a certain vinosity, and aromas of ripe fruits, while Meunier contributes to roundness on the palate and Chardonnay to the finesse of the whole. The selection of base wines involves different Champagne crus, chosen for their complementarity and their ability to build a consistent profile from one edition to another. About 20 to 30% reserve wines enrich the blend, bringing additional maturity and more evolved aromatic nuances. The cuvée benefits from about thirty months of aging on lees, during which it gradually develops its texture and secondary aromas. Its dosage of 5 grams per liter, corresponding to the Extra Brut category, preserves the clarity of the fruit and highlights the natural freshness of the wine. The magnum offers particularly interesting conditions for this cuvée, with a ratio between the volume of champagne and the oxygen present in the neck more favorable to a slow and regular evolution.
In the glass, the Réserve Impériale presents a bright golden yellow robe, animated by fine and persistent effervescence. The bouquet opens with notes of yellow peach, fresh apricot, and ripe pear, mingled with nuances of candied citrus and white flowers. Aeration reveals a more gourmand register, evoking lightly toasted brioche, dried fruits, and a discreet spicy touch. The attack is generous, carried by a creamy mousse that accompanies a full and flavorful body without ever weighing down the palate. The presence of Pinot Noir translates into a delicate, almost tactile vinosity, while the freshness of Chardonnay and the precision of the dosage bring relief to the whole. The finish maintains a pleasant tension, prolonged by notes of yellow fruits, citrus zest, and a subtle mineral impression. More than a simple aperitif champagne, this Réserve Impériale in magnum will perfectly accompany seared scallops, roasted lobster, farm poultry with morels, or delicately golden sweetbreads, pairings that highlight its depth and texture.
