In Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou occupies an exceptional gravel ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary and is one of the most renowned terroirs of the Médoc. The second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has belonged to the Borie family since 1941 and develops a style based on precision, depth, and tannic finesse. The deep, very draining gravel particularly favors Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety in the identity of the cru. Merlot completes this structure by bringing more flesh and suppleness to the mid-palate. The influence of the estuary helps regulate temperatures and preserve slow ripening, which is crucial for aromatic quality and tannin texture. The 2019 vintage is part of a generous but balanced year, offering complete ripeness without losing the characteristic freshness of great Saint-Julien wines. Ducru-Beaucaillou 2019 thus combines intensity, elegance, and remarkable aging potential.
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2019 blends 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. This strong majority of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a deep backbone, a very clear expression of blackcurrant and graphite, as well as great persistence. Merlot adds volume and a more enveloping texture that balances the natural uprightness of Cabernet. The different lots are vinified separately to preserve the personality of the plots before composing the final blend. Extraction is carried out with precision to build the body without hardening the tannins, which are particularly ripe in this vintage. Aging in French oak barrels gradually refines the structure and supports the wine's concentration without masking the fruit. The 2019 stands out for remarkable density but also for a finesse that allows it to envisage evolution over several decades.
The color shows a very deep garnet hue with still strong purple reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, graphite, and cedar. Aeration gradually reveals blond tobacco, licorice, cocoa, and nuances of fine spices that enrich the fruity register. The palate is ample and structured, but the tannic grain remains particularly fine and gives a sensation of depth without heaviness. Cabernet Sauvignon brings tension and length, while Merlot rounds out the mid-palate and enhances the velvety character of the whole. The finish is very long, precise, and fresh, on black fruits, graphite, spices, and a slight smoky note. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2019 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
