Château KIRWAN 2005
In Cantenac, at the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Kirwan occupies a terroir of deep gravel soils that fully contributes to the elegance and finesse characteristic of the great wines of the area. A Third Growth classified in 1855, the estate has a long history and remains associated with a classic expression of Margaux, blending structure, floral notes, and supple texture. Cabernet Sauvignon holds a central place in the blend, bringing uprightness, freshness, and aging potential. Merlot completes this framework with more flesh and roundness, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are used as complements depending on the vintage. The 2005 vintage, remarkable in Bordeaux, offered particularly favorable conditions for slow and even ripening, allowing for concentrated grapes while maintaining beautiful freshness. Kirwan 2005 thus stands out for notable depth, supported by a serious tannic structure and an aromatic profile still very expressive today. After more than twenty years in bottle, the wine is now in a phase of evolution where maturity and tertiary complexity begin to take precedence over the mere power of fruit.
Château Kirwan 2005 is based on a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a straight and persistent structure to the wine, with notes of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar. Merlot brings more volume and velvety texture to the palate, while Cabernet Franc nuances the whole with a floral and spicy touch. Petit Verdot, used in smaller proportion, enhances the color and adds additional depth. Parcel vinification preserves the personality of the different lots before the final blend. Aging in French oak barrels gradually refines the matter and accompanies the evolution of the tannins without masking the character of the terroir. The 2005 still has a beautiful reserve of structure, but its interest now lies as much in the complexity acquired with time as in its residual aging potential.
The color today shows a deep garnet with ruby nuances and slightly brick hues on the rim. The nose develops ripe blackcurrant, black plum, and cherry, accompanied by violet, cedar, and blond tobacco. With aeration, notes of fine leather, undergrowth, cocoa, and sweet spices progressively enrich the bouquet. The palate retains a beautiful breadth, with now softened tannins giving the wine a more velvety and harmonious texture. Persistent freshness balances the evolved fruit and prolongs the tasting with nuances of graphite, tobacco, and fine wood. The finish remains long and refined, in a more subtle than demonstrative register. Château Kirwan 2005 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, pigeon, game birds, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
