Château MARGAUX 2016
In the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Margaux occupies one of the most prestigious terroirs of the Médoc, shaped by deep gravelly slopes that ensure remarkable drainage and promote the rooting of Cabernet Sauvignon. Classified as Premier Grand Cru in 1855, the estate is inseparable from its famous neoclassical château and a viticultural history spanning several centuries. Under the direction of Corinne Mentzelopoulos and the estate's technical team, the vineyard is managed with extreme parcel precision to express the finesse unique to this terroir. Cabernet Sauvignon plays a central role, bringing length, structure, and aromatic distinction, while Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot complement depending on the vintage. The year 2016 offered a particularly favorable combination of summer drought and late-season conditions allowing slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The Cabernets reached an exceptional level of maturity while maintaining remarkable freshness. Château Margaux 2016 thus stands out by a rare alliance between concentration, purity of fruit, and tannic elegance.
Château Margaux 2016 blends 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. The exceptionally high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a particularly straight and deep architecture, with remarkable precision in the tannin structure. Cabernet Franc adds an additional floral and spicy dimension, while Merlot contributes more flesh at the core of the palate. Petit Verdot completes the ensemble with a touch of depth and tension. The different lots are vinified separately to preserve the identity of each parcel before composing the final blend. Aging in French oak barrels then slowly accompanies the wine's structure, refining the texture without masking the fruit's brightness. Still very young in its evolution, the 2016 possesses a concentration and freshness that give it exceptional aging potential.
The color shows an extremely deep garnet with still bright ruby reflections. The nose unfolds delicately on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, graphite, and cedar. With aeration, licorice, blond tobacco, fine spices, and a delicate floral dimension gradually appear, reinforcing Margaux's identity. The palate impresses with the finesse of its tannic grain, with dense but never massive matter and a continuous sensation of precision. Cabernet Sauvignon brings remarkable length and tension that runs through the entire tasting, while the other grape varieties subtly enrich the texture and aromatic complexity. The finish is exceptionally persistent, on blackcurrant, flowers, graphite, spices, and a fine smoky note. Château Margaux 2016 will accompany a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, veal with morels, or refined cuisine centered around black truffle.
