In Margaux, Château Labégorce occupies a historic vineyard spread over several sectors of the appellation, between gravelly hills and more clay-sandy soils. The property belongs to the Perrodo family, who have gradually brought together and restructured different vineyard estates to give the domain coherence and a strong identity. Cabernet Sauvignon finds on the gravel the necessary conditions to develop finesse, structure, and length, while Merlot brings more flesh and suppleness. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot complete the blend and contribute to the aromatic complexity of the whole. Parcel work allows adapting harvest dates and vinifications to the personality of each terroir. The style of Labégorce favors a generous expression of Margaux but retains the floral dimension and tannic finesse characteristic of the appellation. The 2020 vintage, sunny and concentrated, produces here a deep and ripe wine without losing the freshness necessary for its balance.
Château Labégorce 2020 blends 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides a straight, structured, and persistent framework, while Merlot enriches the mid-palate with a fuller and velvety texture. Cabernet Franc contributes floral finesse and spicy nuances, while Petit Verdot discreetly enhances color and depth. The different lots are vinified separately to preserve their personality before composing the final blend. Extractions are carried out precisely to accompany the natural richness of the vintage without hardening the tannins. Aging in French oak barrels gradually refines the structure and allows the fruit to retain its clarity. The 2020 currently has beautiful density, but its freshness and the quality of its tannic framework allow it to envisage a long evolution in the bottle.
The color shows a deep garnet with still strong purple reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, cedar, and licorice. Aeration gradually reveals cocoa, graphite, fine tobacco, and hints of sweet spices. The palate is ample and velvety, with ripe and precise tannins that structure the matter without removing its suppleness. Merlot brings a fleshy depth, while Cabernet Sauvignon maintains drive and persistent freshness until the finish. The finish extends on black fruits, spices, graphite, and a slight floral nuance, in a still young but already harmonious ensemble. Château Labégorce 2020 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or veal with morels.
