Château Meyney - Les Hauts de Meyney 2013
Neighboring Montrose on the deep gravel of Saint Estèphe, Château Meyney is one of the great classic names of the left bank. The vineyard is rooted in a bedrock of gravel and blue clay close to the estuary, producing firm-grained Cabernets and fleshy Merlots. The second wine, Les Hauts de Meyney, offers a more accessible interpretation of the estate's style, with the same rigorous plot selection and careful aging.
The 2013 Médoc vintage delivered fresh, digestible, and well-structured wines. Les Hauts de Meyney blends primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot. Harvested by hand, meticulous sorting, and gentle vatting to preserve the fruit. Aged for approximately twelve months in French oak barrels, including a limited portion of new oak, to refine the texture without marking the wine. Aged at the château after resting in vats to harmonize the whole.
The nose opens with blackcurrant, morello cherry, and blackberry, joined by notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and a hint of sweet spice. The palate is slender and precise, medium-bodied, carried by a fine tannic structure with a Médoc grain. The heart of the palate combines black fruits, blond tobacco, and melted oak. The finish, fresh and savory, stretches onto white pepper, bitter orange, and a hint of flint. The wine is now ready to drink, with good table presence.
At the table, choose grilled prime rib, roast rack of lamb, duck breast, veal jus with morels, or squab. Pair well with a mature Comté or cheddar. Serve between 16 and 17°C in a wide glass. Open 45 minutes before serving or decant briefly to loosen the bouquet. Best served now and for five to seven years, depending on the cellar.
Grape varieties: Merlot 60%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, Petit Verdot 10%.
