Château RAUZAN-GASSIES 2005
In Margaux, Château Rauzan-Gassies belongs to the historic core of estates originating from the former Rauzan domain. A Second Growth classified in 1855, the château relies on a vineyard of deep gravel soils particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape variety that gives the wines their structure, freshness, and aging potential. Merlot adds more flesh to the mid-palate, while Petit Verdot completes the blend with a spicier dimension. The property has belonged to the Quié family since the mid-20th century, with thorough work carried out over the decades on the vineyard and facilities. The 2005 vintage is among the great Bordeaux successes of the early 21st century, thanks to a dry and consistent season that allowed for remarkable ripeness. In Margaux, this concentration was accompanied by beautiful freshness, producing wines that are deep yet balanced. Rauzan-Gassies 2005 is currently at a particularly interesting stage, where the ripe fruit begins to gradually give way to more complex nuances.
The wine is based on a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides a straight framework, notes of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar, while Merlot rounds out the structure and enriches the texture. Petit Verdot is used in smaller proportion to enhance color and the spicy register. The different lots are vinified separately before blending to preserve the personality of the parcels. Aging in French oak barrels then accompanies the material and gradually refines the tannins. The generous character of 2005 produced a wine both dense and structured, with significant aging potential. After more than twenty years in bottle, the structure has softened and the whole now offers more smoothness and complexity.
The color shows a deep garnet with ruby nuances and slightly tawny hues on the rim. The nose combines ripe blackcurrant, black plum, and cherry with notes of violet, cedar, and blond tobacco. With aeration, fine leather, undergrowth, licorice, sweet spices, and a slight touch of truffle gradually appear. The palate retains beautiful density, with now polished tannins that give a silkier and more harmonious texture. The fruit remains present but is accompanied by a more tertiary dimension, supported by freshness that maintains the length. The finish extends on tobacco, graphite, spices, and earthy nuances in a fully mature register. Château Rauzan-Gassies 2005 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with cep mushrooms, rack of lamb, game birds, or refined cuisine centered around black truffle.
