Located in the heart of Pomerol, Château Rouget has belonged to the Labruyère family since 1992 and is one of the historic estates of this small right bank appellation. Its vineyard extends over different sectors of the plateau and its surroundings, with a mosaic of soils mixing gravel, clay, and sandier formations. This diversity allows the merlot, which is largely predominant, to develop both depth, flesh, and finesse, while the cabernet franc brings freshness and aromatic relief. The estate has undergone significant restructuring of the vineyard and facilities to gradually refine the precision of vinifications. The plots are monitored separately to adapt harvest dates and extractions to their own maturity. Rouget's style favors a generous expression of Pomerol, but without seeking excessive power. The 2019 vintage is particularly harmonious, combining fruit ripeness, freshness, and velvety texture.
Château Rouget 2019 blends 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. Merlot naturally forms the heart of the wine, bringing ample body, ripe black fruits, and an enveloping texture. Cabernet franc complements this richness with a more floral, spicy, and vertical expression that helps extend the finish. The grapes are harvested at maturity plot by plot before vinification aimed at preserving the purity of the fruit and the finesse of the tannins. Extractions are carried out with restraint to build a deep structure without hardening the palate. Barrel aging then accompanies the density of the vintage and allows the different components of the blend to harmonize gradually. The 2019 thus has the expected concentration of a great Pomerol while retaining enough energy to envisage prolonged aging in the cellar.
The color shows a deep garnet with still purplish reflections. The bouquet opens on blackberry, black plum, and cherry, then develops nuances of violet, licorice, and sweet spices. With aeration, notes of cocoa, cedar, graphite, and undergrowth gradually enrich the aromatic expression. The palate is ample and velvety, supported by fine tannins that frame a generous body without weighing it down. The black fruit remains precise, while the cabernet franc brings additional freshness and a slight tension in the mid-palate. The finish lingers on plum, spices, cocoa, and a discreet mineral dimension. Château Rouget 2019 will accompany a beef filet with cep mushrooms, duck breast, roasted pigeon, a rack of lamb, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
