SINE QUA NON - The Path to Heresy - Grenache 2015 Sine Qua Non is the oenophile work of Manfred Krankl, one of the most renowned winemakers in the world. Originally from Austria, he emigrated to California in the 1980s. Starting with odd jobs and opening restaurants, he settled in Ventura to make wine as a hobby at first. Given the quality of his wines, his friends encouraged him to sell them, and he conceded in 1994, starting with about a hundred cases. Robert Parker was one of the first buyers and awarded a score of 95/100, extraordinary for a first (he would later award numerous 100/100, defining Manfred Krankl as "one of the most creative and multidimensional winemakers on planet Earth"). Since then, Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine have sold the restaurants to devote themselves fully to their winery. All the labels and names of the wines, however eccentric, are dreamed up by Manfred, and they change every year: according to Manfred, his wines are never the same from one year to the next. In 2004, he began growing his own grapes, gradually stopping buying grapes from other winemakers, thus leaving behind varieties such as Pinot Noir, which made him legendary, to focus on Rhône blends (Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne). With only 3,500 cases produced per year, it is extremely difficult to obtain an allocation, but Manfred Krankl does not intend to develop his estate further, preferring to make "a bottle of wine costing 3 million dollars, rather than 3 million bottles costing one dollar", not wanting to abandon his other passions such as music, motorbikes or even art.
