Domaine Berry-Althoff - Syrault 2025
The Domaine Berry-Althoff is one of the most exciting young labels in the Gard region, led by Imogen Berry and Robin Althoff in Aubais. Since their establishment in 2015, the two winemakers have built an artisanal estate, sensitive and deeply attached to life. Their work is based on organic and biodynamic farming certified by Demeter, with particular attention paid to soils, biodiversity, and the precision of vinifications. The estate's cuvées stand out for their pursuit of freshness, finesse, and drinkability, far from the overly extracted southern reds. Syrault 2025 perfectly embodies this contemporary vision of the Languedoc Gard region, with a light touch red but very expressive in its fruit. Coming from owned plots located in Aubais and Aujargues, it highlights the Hauterivian and Valanginian limestones. It is a lively, frank, and bright wine, designed for immediate pleasure without giving up the identity of the terroir.
The Syrault 2025 cuvée is based on a blend of 56% Syrah and 44% Cinsault, two Mediterranean grape varieties worked here in a spirit of infusion and delicacy. The Syrah brings notes of black fruits, blueberry, pepper, and a slight spicy depth. The Cinsault lightens the whole, giving fluidity, freshness, and a more airy sensation in the mouth. The grapes are hand-harvested, then destemmed to favor the purity of the fruit and the finesse of the structure. The 7-day infusion maceration, between 20 and 22°C, gently extracts color, aromas, and delicate tannins. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, following a natural and low-intervention winemaking approach. The 8-month aging in stainless steel tanks preserves the brightness of the fruit, while the absence of added sulfites enhances the free, direct, and vibrant character of the cuvée.
In the glass, Domaine Berry-Althoff Syrault 2025 reveals a bright garnet robe, young and full of energy. The nose opens on redcurrant, blueberry, fresh blackberry, and raspberry, with a very fine peppery touch. The palate is lively, supple, and generous, carried by a brilliant fruit and a deliberately delicate structure. The gentle extraction gives a fluid, digestible, and very pleasant red to drink, without heaviness or excess tannins. The finish remains fresh, juicy, and slightly spicy, in a style perfectly suited to convivial moments. This wine is ideally enjoyed young, slightly chilled around 14 to 15°C. It pairs very well with artisan pizza, lasagna, tomato pasta, a charcuterie board, grilled vegetables, or a simple and generous barbecue.
