Domaine Danjou Banessy - Les Mirandes 2023
Domaine Danjou-Banessy is one of the most unique estates in Roussillon, located in Espira-de-l’Agly, in the Agly valley, north of Perpignan. Benoît and Sébastien Danjou continue a family story by giving the Catalan terroirs a precise, lively reading deeply attached to the nature of the soils. The estate works with certified organic farming, using biodynamic practices, in search of rooted, infused wines carrying a strong sense of place. Les Mirandes holds a special place in the range, as this cuvée highlights Syrah on a volcanic and basaltic terroir, rare in this Roussillon landscape. The named place Sote-Mirandes, in Espira-de-l’Agly, gives the wine a dark, spicy, and mineral expression, far from the simply sunny Syrahs of the South. The 2023 vintage fits into this search for balance between Mediterranean ripeness, relative altitude freshness, and infusion finesse. Domaine Danjou-Banessy Les Mirandes 2023 thus presents itself as a deep, vibrant Catalan red, intensely marked by its origin.
The Les Mirandes 2023 cuvée is made from 100% Syrah, coming from vines planted in the early 2000s on the named place Sote-Mirandes. This volcanic and basaltic terroir gives the wine a particular signature, with a sensation of tension, smoke, and mineral depth. The whole harvest at 100% brings a floral, spicy, and airy dimension while structuring the wine with finesse. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts, in vats, respecting the grape and the vintage. Extraction by infusion allows obtaining a delicate matter, without harshness or overconcentration, despite the natural intensity of Syrah. The long aging of 24 to 36 months in used barrels supports the wine in depth, without excessive woody marking. Les Mirandes 2023 thus expresses a Roussillon Syrah of character, both peppery, floral, saline, and designed for evolution.
On tasting, Domaine Danjou-Banessy Les Mirandes 2023 shows a deep, dark red robe, bright with violet reflections. The nose may evoke blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, violet, pepper, licorice, smoked bacon, and a touch of warm stone. On the palate, the wine is slender, infused, and very precise, with serious matter but never massive. Syrah brings a spicy framework, fine tannins, and freshness that lengthens the whole with elegance. The basaltic terroir gives a dark, mineral, and slightly smoky finish, enhancing the wine's depth. This red will ideally accompany roasted herb lamb, aged ribeye steak, spiced duck, pigeon, Catalan stew, grilled vegetables, or Mediterranean cuisine with smoky notes. It can be enjoyed after decanting in its youth but will gain complexity after several years in the cellar.
