Located at Château de Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier continues its exemplary interpretation of the Côte de Nuits terroirs. In Premeaux-Prissey, Clos de la Maréchale is the estate's historic monopole. This vast walled vineyard, situated on outcropping limestone, yields wines of a precision nuanced by a singular floral grace. Cultivation here is carried out with a constant demand for purity and precision in order to preserve the expression of the terroir.
Clos de la Maréchale 2023 is a red wine made exclusively from vines within the monopole. The grapes are harvested at precise ripeness and then carefully sorted. The majority of the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts with measured extractions to enhance the mouthfeel. Aging occurs in lightly toasted oak barrels with a controlled proportion of new oak to add depth without masking the fruit. The magnum format allows for slower aeration, preserving aromatic freshness and extending aging potential. It is the ideal bottle for serving and will develop harmoniously over ten to fifteen years.
The nose opens with aromas of raspberry, Morello cherry, and blackberry. Hints of peony, violet, and licorice emerge with aeration. A subtle hint of graphite and orange peel underscores the wine's chalky character. The palate is precise and silky. The attack is crisp, followed by a heart of juicy red fruit framed by supple, fine-grained tannins. The mineral structure carries the wine without heaviness. The finish is long, fresh, and mouthwatering. It prolongs the crisp fruit flavors with echoes of sweet spices, cherry pit, and a discreet touch of smoke.
At the table, this premier cru pairs well with a pink veal fillet, pigeon with chanterelles, or roast free-range poultry with herbs. It complements grilled rib-eye steak with a light jus, black truffle risotto, glazed root vegetables, and a mature Brie de Meaux whose sweetness respects its balance.
