Domaine La Grange des Pères 2022
The Domaine de la Grange des Pères is located in Aniane, in the Languedoc. It produces small quantities of two of the most sought-after and most expensive wines in the region. The estate was created in 1989 when Laurent Vaillé bought land near Mas de Daumas Gassac. The soil was rich in limestone, rocks, and glacial scree and required a lot of blasting and bulldozer work to produce an ideal terroir. Laurent Vaillé already had an excellent track record, having worked with Coche-Dury in Meursault, Gérard Chave in Hermitage, and Eloi Durrbach at Domaine Trévallon in Provence. Organic and biodynamic methods are practiced in the vineyard but without certification. In May 2021, Laurent Vaillé suddenly passed away, leaving a great void in the wine world. Since then, his brother Bernard Vaillé has continued to vinify the wines of the Domaine.
La Grange des Pères Rouge is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Counoise. The use of Cabernet Sauvignon prevents it from being classified under the AOC Languedoc, so it falls under the IGP Pays de l’Hérault classification. The grape varieties are vinified separately and aged in 228-liter barrels for 24 months. The barrels are then blended, and the wine is placed in tanks for a few months before bottling.
