Domaine Marcel Lapierre - Morgon 2024
Domaine Marcel Lapierre is a major figure in Morgon and one of the pioneers of so-called natural Beaujolais. For several decades, the family has been cultivating Gamay organically on poor granitic soils that naturally limit yields. The work focuses on soil life, old vines, and just-ripe maturity rather than volume. In the cellar, the philosophy is just as refined, with low-intervention vinifications and very measured use of sulfur. Wines signed Lapierre are sought after for their fruit purity, exemplary drinkability, and ability to sincerely express the Morgon terroir. This Morgon 2024 fully fits into this lineage, offering a reading of the appellation that is both generous and elegant.
The Morgon 2024 cuvée comes from Gamay vines rooted in the granitic sands and decomposed rock typical of the cru. The harvest is done by hand, in small crates, to preserve the integrity of the berries. Fermentation is largely done with whole clusters, using a semi-carbonic maceration that promotes aromatic brightness and fine tannins. Indigenous yeasts ensure a natural fermentation start, without unnecessary additions or oenological corrections. Aging then takes place in large vats and old barrels, with minimal racking to preserve the wine's lively character. The addition of sulfur remains very limited, only to stabilize and ensure good resistance at opening and during aging.
On tasting, Morgon 2024 reveals an intense nose of fresh cherry, raspberry, small red berries, and stone fruit, enhanced by fine notes of peony and sweet spices. On the palate, the attack is juicy and immediate, with crunchy fruit supported by a silky texture and fine tannins. The mid-palate gains depth with aeration, unveiling nuances of Morello cherry, light licorice, and a stony framework reminiscent of granite. The finish is long, fresh, slightly saline, leaving an impression of great digestibility and naturally inviting another sip. At the table, this Morgon ideally accompanies fine charcuterie, roasted poultry, braised ham, herb-roasted chicken, or hearty bistro cuisine. It also shows superbly with vegetarian dishes based on roasted vegetables, seasonal gratins, or a beautiful Mediterranean vegetable tart.
