Franck Balthazar - Cuvée Casimir Balthazar 2023
In Cornas, Franck Balthazar pursues the artisanal aesthetic inherited from his grandfather Casimir. Hand-till work on the granite hillsides, measured yields, and harvests at just the right ripeness. The vinifications prioritize the infusion and transparency of fruit, without artifice, for straightforward, deep, and digestible reds.
Casimir Balthazar 2023 pays homage to the family patriarch. Produced primarily from Syrah planted on granite terroirs around Cornas but vinified outside the appellation, the cuvée seeks immediate expression of the grape variety. A sunny vintage with a balanced profile thanks to cooler nights. Whole bunches predominantly depending on the plot, indigenous fermentation in vats, gentle extractions. Aged in old foudres and demi-muids to polish the texture without any noticeable oaky imprint. Bottled without fining or filtration, controlled sulfur.
The nose opens with violet, blackberry, and blueberry, followed by black pepper, black olive, and a hint of smoke. The palate is slender and juicy, with a heart of crisp black fruits and a granite structure that brings freshness and length. The tannins are fine, chalky, and perfectly ripe. The finish is long and straight, with accents of dried herbs, graphite, and morello cherry, with a discreet salinity that characterizes the northern Rhône.
At the table, serve the cuvée with grilled prime rib, pink rack of lamb, peppered duck breast, confit beef cheek, or roast pigeon. A great affinity with dishes featuring cold herbs and spices. Ideal temperature 15 to 16 °C in a large tulip glass. Open 45 to 60 minutes before serving or decant briefly to loosen the bouquet. Immediate drinking window, with a cellaring potential of a decade.
