Wasenhaus - Mohlin - Spätburgunder 2023
The Wasenhaus estate, led by Christoph and Alexander Wißler, has established itself as one of the finest references for Spätburgunder in the Baden region. Based in Staufen, the two brothers develop a demanding parcel-by-parcel approach, attentive to soils, exposures, and plant material. Their style favors elegance, clarity, and energy, with wines built on freshness and depth rather than showiness. Each cuvée reflects a precise origin and a clear intention, revealing the diversity of terroirs in southern Baden. Möhlin embodies the sunniest and most structured interpretation of their range.
The Möhlin cuvée – Spätburgunder 2023 comes from parcels located on the Ölberg of Ehrenstetter, partly on poor, shallow, clay-limestone soils. The vines, facing southeast, benefit from more pronounced sunlight, producing riper and more expressive grapes. These parcels, worked manually, are mostly planted with German clones, complemented by an addition of Burgundian massal selections. Fermentation takes place with 40% whole clusters in wooden vats, to bring structure and aromatic complexity while preserving finesse. The wine is then aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, with a precise and restrained use of wood. Möhlin stands out for a fuller body and a sunnier expression of Spätburgunder.
On the palate, Möhlin 2023 offers a Pinot Noir that is both generous and balanced. The nose opens with ripe red and black fruits, cherry and raspberry, accompanied by spicy notes and a deeper touch linked to the whole cluster harvest. The mouth is ample, structured, and energetic, supported by fine tannins and a beautiful freshness that avoids any heaviness. The warmer exposure results in a generous body, perfectly held by an elegant framework. The finish is long, persistent, and harmonious. This wine ideally accompanies roasted meats, lamb, gourmet cuisine, or dishes with bold flavors, and has real aging potential. A noble and sunny Spätburgunder, true to Wasenhaus’s parcel ambition.
