DÖNNHOFF- Höllenpfad (sec) 2016

We are here in the town of Roxheimer, in the northern part of the Nahe, closer to the Rhine. In this small valley, the Dönnhoffs cultivate 40-year-old vines on the Höllenpfad terroir, literally “path to hell”! Did the ancients refer to the hell of working the vines on these extremely steep slopes, often more than 50%?

According to the Dönnhoffs, Hollenpfad constitutes the ideal terroir for making great dry Rieslings, at the same time generous, intense and stony. This beautiful 2016 vintage is obviously a model of its kind. Helmut Dönnhoff says it simply: "He tastes exactly the way I wanted Höllenpfad".

The bouquet displays real sophistication: it comes and goes, full of spirit, between juicy and ripe white fruits, lemon thyme, bay leaf, white flowers, sand, graphite, pine resin, Szechuan pepper, citrus zest… The palate is generous, dense and ripe, but constantly enhanced by slightly spicy accents.

Here is a wine full of energy, an ample wine but always active, deploying its finish both lemony and chalky with this naturalness, this sensation of purity that we love so much in the wines of Dönnhoff. It's very beautiful today (we recommend a good decanting especially if you want to eliminate the very slight pearl.
