The abbey was founded for the first time in 1135 by Adalbert I of Saarbrücken, Archbishop of Mainz when the Cistercian order was beaming in Europe. It was refounded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux of the Cistercians as a daughter of the abbey of Cîteaux. The abbey church, with three aisles, was built in two stages, from 1145 to 1160, then from 1170 to 1186. This abbey is to this day one of the best preserved in the world. The building houses a cultural foundation. The abbey museum traces the history of the abbey and the Cistercian order.
