Wittmann - Westhofener Riesling 2016
Weingut Wittmann is located in Westhofen, in the Wonnegau district of the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen, Germany. The Wittmanns have been winegrowers since the 17th century. It is now managed by Günter, Elisabeth, Eva Clüsserath and Philipp Wittmann. The estate has been certified organic since 1990 and biodynamic since 2004.
After the harvest, the grapes are sorted and selected in the winery, before being gently pressed. The juice flows by gravity down into the cellar. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in the vaulted cellar that was built in 1829, in eighty wooden casks. The oldest of these barrels is from 1890 and every cask contains the harvest of a single vineyard parcel.
The VDP.ERSTE & VDP.GROSSE LAGE vineyard sites in Westhofen are dominated by heavy clay-marl soils with veins of limestone in the upper stratum. The subsoils are dominated by water-channelling layers of limestone rock. The typical limestone minerality of Westhofen is also characterised by very ripe fruit. For the Westhofener Riesling, grapes from the sites Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen and fruit from neighbouring vineyards that are classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE are vinified together.
Trocken means ‘dry’ in German.
Grape variety: 100% Riesling
