Armagnac Laterrade - 15 years - Barrel Proof - 40%
Armagnacs Laterrade is a Gascon family house dedicated to the selection, distillation, and aging of eaux-de-vie with character. Trained as a sommelier, Vincent Laterrade developed his approach by touring estates and old cellars in the region, searching for barrels that had remained outside traditional circuits. This patient work, nurtured by trusting relationships with producers, allowed him to assemble a remarkable collection, with vintages dating back to 1904. Each remains attached to an identified estate to preserve the memory of the place, the wine, and the year it comes from. In Mauvezin-d’Armagnac, the aging continues at the slow pace of the cellar, in an environment where humidity, wood, and time gradually shape the eaux-de-vie. The house favors bottlings without coloring or oenological artifices, with particular attention to natural alcohol levels. This pursuit of transparency, extended by the precise eye of a taster, places the personality of each batch at the center of the work.
This 15-year-old belongs to the heart of the Laterrade range, built around blends composed for their balance rather than just their power. The age statement indicates that the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has spent at least fifteen years in wood, with some components possibly significantly older. Over this extended aging in French oak barrels, the initial fruit has been enriched with spicy, pastry-like, and lightly roasted nuances. Presented at its natural strength of 40%, this Armagnac is neither reduced, colored, nor filtered, in accordance with the house philosophy. This measured alcohol level thus reflects no dilution: it results from the slow evaporation that accompanies barrel aging, the famous angel’s share. The choice of barrel proof preserves continuity between the cellar and the glass, without seeking to correct texture or standardize the aromatic profile. The whole thus favors softness, fruit depth, and the patina of time, in a particularly accessible register for an eau-de-vie of this age.
The color shows a deep amber hue, crossed with copper and light mahogany reflections. The first nose evokes ripe plum, candied mirabelle, and dried apricot, quickly joined by orange peel, wax, and a touch of dark honey. Aeration reveals deeper notes of vanilla, walnut, blond tobacco, and nutmeg, with a smooth woodiness that never dominates the fruit. On the palate, the attack is soft and enveloping, carried by a velvety texture that the natural 40% strength makes particularly harmonious. The mid-palate combines stewed fruits, cocoa, roasted almond, and some brown spices, while a discreet freshness preserves the length. The finish, persistent without austerity, returns to dried fig, citrus zest, walnut, and a slight echo of coffee. This Armagnac can be appreciated alone after a few minutes of aeration but will also find its place alongside a Gascon croustade, a tarte tatin, a dark chocolate dessert, or pan-seared foie gras accompanied by roasted fruits.
