Willi Schaefer - Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese 2023
Weingut Willi Schaefer is located in Graach in the Moselle region of Germany . The Schaefer family has been involved in viticulture since at least 1590, and some sources date this tradition back to 1121. The estate was founded by Martha and Willibrord Schaefer. Since 2015, Christoph Schaefer and his wife Andrea have run the family estate. The estate covers approximately 4.2 hectares, cultivating exclusively Riesling on prestigious plots such as Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The vines, some of which are over 100 years old, are planted on steep slopes composed of Devonian shale.
The 28.5-hectare Graacher Domprobst vineyard faces southwest, providing the vines with optimal sunshine all day long, and benefits from blue-grey Devonian clay-shale soil. Willi Schaefer Estate owns 2 hectares of vines on this vineyard. Spätlese means "Late Harvest" and is made from grapes that have a must weight of 76-90 Oechsle (the hydrometric scale measuring the density of grape must), which equates to 172-209 g/L of residual sugar.
Grape variety: 100% Riesling
