RUM A1710 - Confessions - 50.2%
The A1710 distillery, located at the Habitation du Simon in François, Martinique, has established itself as one of the most inspiring artisanal addresses in contemporary agricole rum. Nestled between mangroves, trade winds, and carefully selected cane plots, it claims a parcel-based, transparent approach deeply attached to Martinican know-how. The canes are hand-harvested then immediately pressed to guarantee juice of exemplary purity. The distillation, carried out in the copper Charentais still La Belle Aline, gives A1710 rums a unique aromatic finesse, blending precision, elegance, and power. True to its philosophy of micro-batches, the house produces rums with a strong identity, each telling its own story. Confessions is among the domain’s most ambitious creations, a characterful cuvée shaped by time, wood, and the patient art of blending.
Confessions 50.2% is an aged rum made exclusively from pure cane juice, distilled with great precision before a long maturation in carefully chosen oak barrels. The aromatic profile results from a complex blend, bringing together rums aged several years in barrels of varied origins, some having contained noble wines or spirits, to add depth and relief. This aging under tropical climate accentuates the exchanges between wood and rum, intensifying color, structure, and aromatic richness. Confessions thus asserts itself as an expressive, structured yet perfectly controlled cuvée, where the agricultural dimension of the juice remains present despite a consciously woody patina. The 50.2% strength was chosen to preserve the density and precision of the blend while offering a silky texture and remarkable balance. It is a rum designed for tasting, a revelation of A1710’s expertise in the art of aging.
On tasting, Confessions 50.2% shows a deep mahogany robe with copper reflections, a sign of prolonged aging. The nose opens on a complex bouquet mixing dried fruits, prune, date, dark chocolate, vanilla, and brown caramel, enhanced by a subtle touch of noble wood and roasted spices. On the palate, the attack is ample and warm, with an enveloping texture where notes of cocoa, coffee, candied fruits, blond tobacco, and fine molasses develop successively. The perfectly integrated strength brings energy and length without ever overpowering the distillate’s finesse. The finish, long and elegant, reveals hints of roasted hazelnut, soft spices, precious wood, and a smoky note that persists nobly. Confessions is ideally enjoyed neat, slowly aired in the glass, and wonderfully accompanies an intense dark chocolate dessert, flambéed banana, an elegant cigar, or caramelized meat with soft spices.
