Champagne Adrien Renoir - The Grape Variety
In Verzy, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, Adrien Renoir crafts a characterful Champagne where Pinot Noir holds a central place. Heir to a family of winemakers established for several generations, he has progressively asserted a more personal approach, attentive to ripeness, soils, and the precision of aging. The estate belongs to this new generation of Champagne producers seeking to express the terroir with greater transparency, without sacrificing the winey dimension typical of the great crus of the Montagne de Reims. In Verzy, the chalk gives Pinot Noir a particular freshness and uprightness, while the exposure and relief bring depth, structure, and fruit intensity. The Grape Variety fits into this direct reading of the village, isolating Pinot Noir in a blanc de noirs cuvée that is both frank, textured, and very readable. This Champagne does not seek to erase the identity of the grape variety: it embraces its relief, flesh, and grain, while maintaining the tension expected from a great chalky terroir. It thus constitutes one of the most expressive expressions of the Adrien Renoir style, between contemporary precision, mineral energy, and depth of palate.
This cuvée is made exclusively from Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru terroir of Verzy. The choice of blanc de noirs highlights the most structuring dimension of the village, with a wine that has more density, presence, and relief than a more classic blended Champagne. According to recent disgorgements, The Grape Variety is notably based on 2020 or 2021 harvests, with aging on lees, vinification in wood, and a very low dosage, around 0.8 to 1.6 g/L depending on the versions. This extra-brut approach lets the terroir speak without weighing down the wine, while giving Pinot Noir a clear, almost tactile expression. The barrel work brings breath and a more polished texture, without turning the cuvée into a woody Champagne. The chalky freshness of Verzy balances the natural flesh of the grape variety and gives the wine a straighter, more saline finish. The Grape Variety thus stands out for its character that is both immediate and serious, capable of accompanying the aperitif but especially designed for the table.
The color presents a slightly deep pale gold, with fine and regular effervescence. The nose evokes ripe apple, pear, vine peach, and some discreet red fruits, then evolves towards notes of almond, blond bread, sweet spices, and wet stone. On the palate, the attack shows beautiful energy, quickly followed by a fuller body, supported by the depth of Pinot Noir. The bubbles accompany the wine with precision, without masking its volume or grain. The whole remains tense, upright, with a finish marked by ripe citrus, chalk, white fruits, and a slight saline touch. This Champagne will pair very well with Comté gougères, aged Iberian ham, roasted langoustines, seared tuna, farm poultry, mushroom risotto, or pressed cheese. Served around 9 to 10°C in a fairly open glass, it will gain in relief after a few minutes of aeration.
