Château Capbern 2018
In Saint-Estèphe, Château Capbern belongs to the Calon Ségur universe and benefits from a typically Médoc terroir, composed of gravel mixed with clay which promotes both drainage and regular water supply. The property, historically known as Capbern-Gasqueton, has gradually asserted a more precise identity under the impetus of the Calon Ségur team. Cabernet Sauvignon finds a straight and deep structure here, while Merlot brings more flesh and suppleness. The vineyard is managed with close attention to each parcel, in order to adapt ripening and vinification to the different components of the terroir. The sought-after style remains faithful to Saint-Estèphe, with dense matter, a fresh framework, and tannins capable of harmoniously softening over time. The warm and generous 2018 vintage brings significant fruit ripeness without erasing the natural tension of the terroir. It thus gives birth to a broad, deep, and already appealing Capbern, while retaining real aging potential.
Château Capbern 2018 blends 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine with expressions of blackcurrant, graphite, and spices, while Merlot enhances the roundness and mid-palate volume. Petit Verdot is used in very limited proportion but adds an extra touch of depth and aromatic relief. The different lots are vinified separately to preserve their identity before the final blend. Extraction remains measured to maintain the finesse of the tannic grain despite the natural concentration of the vintage. Barrel aging gradually supports the wine's structure and refines the tannins without imposing excessive oakiness. After several years in bottle, the 2018 begins to gain harmony while retaining enough density to continue its evolution.
The color shows a deep garnet hue with still strong ruby reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum, accompanied by nuances of cedar, graphite, and licorice. With aeration, notes of cocoa, blond tobacco, and sweet spices gradually appear, enriching the fruity register. The palate is ample and structured, with now well-integrated tannins that give the matter a more velvety texture. Cabernet Sauvignon brings length while Merlot adds more roundness and indulgence. The finish remains fresh and persistent, on black fruits, spices, and a slight smoky dimension. Château Capbern 2018 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, duck breast, grilled ribeye, pigeon, or mushroom dishes.
