Château DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU 2008
In Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou overlooks the Gironde estuary from a remarkable deep gravel ridge that gave its name to the estate. Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the property has belonged to the Borie family since 1941 and has established itself as one of the most refined expressions of Saint-Julien. The Günzian gravel soils, poor and very well-drained, are particularly suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the historic backbone of the château's wines. Merlot complements this structure with more flesh and suppleness, while the influence of the estuary helps regulate temperatures and promotes slow ripening. The style of Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on a combination of depth, tannic finesse, and great aging potential. The 2008 vintage, more classic than sunny, benefited from a favorable late season that allowed the Cabernets to reach full maturity while maintaining beautiful freshness. After nearly twenty years of evolution, the wine is now entering a particularly interesting phase, where the Médoc structure begins to blend into a more tertiary complexity.
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2008 blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. This high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a straight, deep, and very persistent framework, with a profile dominated by blackcurrant, graphite, and spices. Merlot complements by rounding out the mid-palate and adding more volume to the whole. The grapes are vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the identity of the different sectors before composing the final blend. The extended aging in French oak barrels then gradually refines the structure and integrates the tannins. The 2008 stands out by having less massive material than the most opulent vintages, but remarkable precision and freshness that perfectly support the length. Its evolution in bottle has already softened the initial architecture while still leaving a beautiful reserve for aging.
The color shows a deep garnet with slightly evolved ruby reflections. The bouquet combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum with nuances of cedar, blond tobacco, and graphite. Upon aeration, licorice, fine leather, spices, and discreet notes of undergrowth gradually appear, enriching the fruity profile. The palate remains structured, but the tannins are now more polished and give the wine an elegant and velvety texture. Cabernet Sauvignon brings great length and persistent freshness, while Merlot maintains a softer and fleshier core. The finish is long, precise, and deeply Médoc, on blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and sweet spices. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2008 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
