Château LE PAPE 2020
Located in Léognan, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Le Pape is a discreet property whose vineyard covers about nine hectares. Its proximity to Château Haut-Bailly places the estate in a particularly sought-after area of the Graves, where gravelly soils encourage deep rooting and regular ripening of the red grape varieties. The vineyard is now associated with the Haut-Bailly team, with whom it shares the same pursuit of precision and elegance. Unlike many crus of the appellation dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, Le Pape gives a major place to Merlot, which brings a fleshy texture and particularly expressive fruit to the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon complements the whole with its structure and length. The small size of the property allows precise work on the different plots and careful selection at harvest time. The château's style thus favors finesse, freshness, and quality of mouthfeel rather than demonstrative concentration.
Château Le Pape 2020 blends 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlots were harvested on September 9, 11, and 15, while the Cabernet Sauvignon benefited from a longer maturation before being picked on September 25. This difference in schedule allows each variety to reach its own balance, with Merlot quickly bringing flesh and depth while Cabernet retains more tension. The 2020 vintage naturally has a beautiful fruit density, characteristic of a warm year but capable of producing great balance on the gravelly terroirs of Pessac-Léognan. The vinification seeks a measured extraction to preserve the finesse of the tannins and maintain aromatic brightness. The aging supports the wine's structure without masking the personality of the grape varieties or the freshness of the terroir. The whole offers a generous but precise expression, already harmonious while having the material necessary to evolve favorably in the bottle.
The color shows a deep garnet hue with still youthful purple reflections. The nose opens with blackberry, black plum, and cherry, before revealing nuances of violet, graphite, and fine spices. Some notes of licorice, cocoa, and cedar gradually appear with aeration and enrich the fruity register. The palate is distinguished by a velvety attack, supported by the roundness of Merlot and a tannic structure sufficiently present to provide length. Cabernet Sauvignon brings a straighter frame and freshness that balances the ripeness of the fruit. The finish remains persistent on black fruits, spices, and a slight smoky dimension characteristic of the reds of Pessac-Léognan. Château Le Pape 2020 will accompany a beef fillet, a roasted rack of lamb, duck breast, pigeon with mushrooms, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
