Château Noaillac 2018
North of Médoc, in Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, Château Noaillac is a family estate run by the Pagès family since 1983. The vineyard now extends over nearly fifty hectares of Garonne gravel soils, in an environment located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. This dual maritime influence helps temper climatic extremes and supports the gradual ripening of the grapes. Merlot forms the base of the blend, combined with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, a classic combination that allows for a balance of roundness, structure, and freshness. The estate claims precise work from pruning to control the load of each vine and prioritize grape quality. The vineyard is managed with sustainable viticulture and benefits from a High Environmental Value certification level 3. Château Noaillac thus produces a Médoc with character, built around generous fruit and a tannic framework serious enough to age in the cellar.
The 2018 vintage benefits from the generous ripeness of this Bordeaux year while maintaining the expected structure of a Médoc wine. The grapes are harvested with sorting to remove berries of insufficient quality before traditional vinification under temperature control. Fermentation and maceration last about twenty days, allowing the gradual build-up of color and tannic matter. Aging continues for twelve months in French oak barrels, with a limited proportion of new wood to preserve the expression of the fruit. Merlot brings a broad and supple texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides more firmness and length. Petit Verdot completes the blend with its spicy character and freshness. After several years in bottle, the 2018 is at a stage where its structure begins to soften while retaining a beautiful reserve of fruit.
The color shows a deep purple hue gradually evolving towards garnet. The bouquet opens with blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe red fruits, accompanied by spicy and lightly toasted nuances. On aeration, notes of cocoa, coffee, licorice, and cedar enrich the fruity profile. The palate has a frank attack followed by a round body structured by now well-integrated tannins. Persistent freshness maintains balance and gives the wine more length than heaviness. The finish returns to black fruits, spices, and a discreet woody note. Château Noaillac 2018 will accompany a grilled rib steak, duck breast, rack of lamb, game birds, or aged cheeses.
