Château PALMER 2009
In Margaux, Château Palmer occupies a terroir of deep gravel soils that gives rise to one of the most recognizable styles of the appellation. Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is historically distinguished by a significant proportion of Merlot, higher than in many neighboring crus, which contributes to the sensual texture and aromatic depth of its wines. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, freshness, and length, while Petit Verdot completes the blend with a spicier and more vertical dimension. The vineyard benefits from the influence of the Gironde estuary and precise parcel work aimed at preserving the identity of each sector. The 2009 vintage, sunny and generous, produced grapes of exceptional ripeness while maintaining sufficient freshness to keep balance. Palmer 2009 thus stands out for remarkable richness, a velvety texture, and a particularly deep aromatic expression. After more than fifteen years of evolution, the wine is now entering a phase where the initial power begins to blend into a more tertiary complexity.
Château Palmer 2009 blends 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the structural framework of the wine, with expressions of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar, while Merlot brings a broad, silky, and particularly enveloping body. Petit Verdot enhances the color, depth, and spicy nuances of the whole. The grapes are vinified separately to preserve the personality of the different parcels before composing the final blend. Aging in French oak barrels gradually refines the matter and accompanies the natural richness of the vintage without erasing the precision of the fruit. The 2009 is characterized by significant concentration, but its balance relies on freshness and tannic quality that avoid any heaviness. Its structure still allows it to evolve for many years in the bottle, even though it is already beginning to reveal a particularly harmonious expression.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The nose opens with blackberry, blackcurrant, and black plum, accompanied by violet, licorice, and cedar. With aeration, notes of cocoa, blond tobacco, sweet spices, and truffle gradually appear, enriching the fruity register. The palate is broad and velvety, with fine and perfectly integrated tannins that give a sensation of continuous depth. Merlot brings a fleshy and sensual texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon maintains remarkable tension until the finish. The finish is long, complex, and persistent, with black fruits, graphite, spices, and balsamic nuances. Château Palmer 2009 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, royal hare, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
