Domaine Christian Barthel - Clos du Sonnenbach Pinot Noir 2024
Domaine Christian Barthel is located in Albé, in the Val de Villé in the heart of Alsace, a mid-mountain area nestled between the foothills of the Vosges. The family estate traces its origins back to the 1960s, when Marthe and René Barthel began cultivating a small vineyard in this isolated valley surrounded by forests. Today managed by the new generation of the family, the estate covers about fourteen hectares and is distinguished by the uniqueness of its plots located between 350 and 500 meters in altitude, a rare feature in the Alsace vineyard. These steep slopes offer a cooler climate that favors the slow ripening of the grapes and preserves their natural freshness. The soils dominated by schist and clayey silts strongly mark the personality of the wines produced in this area. The estate is managed organically and favors viticulture attentive to soil balance and terroir expression. In this context, the Clos du Sonnenbach Pinot Noir 2024 cuvée represents one of the emblematic expressions of the estate and illustrates the ability of Pinot Noir to thrive on these mountain terroirs.
The Clos du Sonnenbach 2024 is made exclusively from Pinot Noir coming from a plot located on the schistous slopes of the Sonnenbach valley. The soils composed of black-gray schists mixed with clayey silts give the wine a fine structure and a particular mineral expression. The harvest is done entirely by hand to preserve the quality of the grapes from these steep slopes. The vinification combines a portion of whole clusters with destemmed grapes, a method that allows preserving the freshness of the fruit while bringing aromatic complexity. The aging is then carried out in old barrels to structure the wine without masking the identity of the grape variety or the terroir. This approach favors measured extraction and a natural expression of Pinot Noir. The result is an elegant red wine that reflects the personality of the mountain vineyard of Albé.
On tasting, Clos du Sonnenbach Pinot Noir 2024 shows a bright ruby color and a nose dominated by aromas of cherry, raspberry, and fresh red berries. Floral nuances reminiscent of peony or rose may appear with aeration, accompanied by a slight spicy and smoky touch. The palate is supple and velvety, supported by a natural freshness that highlights the mountain origin of the wine. The tannins remain fine and discreet, allowing a crisp and precise fruit to express itself. The balance relies on lightness and finesse rather than power, in a style typical of Alsace Pinot Noirs from cool terroirs. The finish, elegant and persistent, extends the notes of red fruits with a slightly mineral sensation. This wine pairs particularly well with roasted poultry, veal dishes, mushrooms, or certain artisanal charcuterie.
