Armagnac Laterrade - Armagnac Ténarèze - 1976 - Domaine Miquéou - Brut de Fût - 42,3%
Armagnac Ténarèze

Armagnac Laterrade - Armagnac Ténarèze - 1976 - Domaine Miquéou - Cask Strength - 42.3%

The Armagnac Ténarèze holds a unique place in the Gascon vineyard, situated between the delicacy of Bas-Armagnac and the firmness of eaux-de-vie from more calcareous terroirs. Its rolling landscapes mainly rest on boulbènes and clay-limestone soils, which often give birth to structured, full-bodied armagnacs particularly suited to long aging. It is in Castelnau-d’Auzan, in this western part of the Gers, that Domaine Miquéou distilled the eau-de-vie selected for this vintage. Vincent Laterrade is precisely committed to rediscovering these property casks, patiently preserved and still capable of telling their place of origin. His sommelier training allows him to approach each selection through tasting, seeking less spectacular power than coherence between fruit, body, and the patina of time. The year and the name of the estate remain fully identified, without blending with another harvest. This transparency gives the bottle a heritage dimension while revealing the more earthy and structured character of the Ténarèze.

Distilled in 1976 at Domaine Miquéou, this Armagnac comes exclusively from this harvest and retains the individuality of its cask. Over its evolution, the initial vigor of the eau-de-vie has mellowed, while the aromas of ripe fruits have enriched with spicy, roasted, and slightly oxidative nuances. The naturally firm structure of the Ténarèze provided a framework capable of supporting this maturation without losing its relief. Its strength of 42.3% corresponds to the natural degree reached at bottling, without reduction intended to adjust it to a predetermined value. The absence of coloring and oenological artifices preserves the hue, texture, and nuances shaped in the cellar. The wood no longer appears as a separate element but as a component fused into the matter, alongside dried fruits and spices. This 1976 expression thus combines the depth of an old vintage with a still perceptible tension, characteristic of well-preserved Ténarèze armagnacs.

The color reveals a deep amber with mahogany and burnished copper reflections. The nose opens slowly on black plum, dried fig, and candied orange, before joining walnut, old wax, and blond tobacco. Aeration brings out bitter cocoa, licorice, mild pepper, and a hint of fine leather, in a complex but light register. On the palate, the attack is ample and poised, supported by a firm framework that the natural strength of 42.3% accompanies with precision. Stewed fruits mingle with brown spices, coffee, and roasted almond, while a discreet freshness maintains the length. The finish persists on walnut, dried zest, sandalwood, and a delicate rancio, with a slight noble dryness typical of very old eaux-de-vie. This vintage deserves to be tasted alone after a few minutes in a tulip glass but can also accompany aged Comté cheese, a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate dessert, or a hare in sauce.
