Armagnac Laterrade - Bas-Armagnac - 1984 - Domaine du Priou - Barrel Proof - 40.4%
Armagnacs Laterrade is committed to preserving what the old Gascon barrels hold most fragile: the memory of an estate, a harvest, and a maturation that time has made impossible to reproduce. Trained as a sommelier, Vincent Laterrade built his collection by visiting properties in search of old batches that have remained outside traditional circuits. His work is not to standardize these eaux-de-vie but to recognize the moment when each reaches a sufficiently accomplished expression to leave the cellar. The Domaine du Priou is located in Hontanx, in the Landes, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac. This western area of the appellation, subject to a noticeable oceanic influence, rests notably on sandy-silty soils known as tawny sands. The eaux-de-vie born there are traditionally appreciated for the finesse of their fruit, their suppleness, and their ability to age for long decades in wood. By keeping the estate's name and vintage on the label, Laterrade restores to this Armagnac its entire identity, without blending it into an anonymous assemblage.
Distilled in 1984 at Domaine du Priou, this eau-de-vie aged for thirty-nine years in French oak barrels. Its prolonged stay in wood slowly transformed the aromas derived from the wine, while softening the structure and enriching the texture. Natural evaporation gradually brought the batch down to 40.4%, the strength at which it was bottled without dilution. This measured strength therefore does not reflect dilution but the result of a long exchange between the Armagnac, the barrel, and the cellar atmosphere. The vintage remains isolated, without blending with another year, to preserve the particular character of the 1984 harvest. Bottling without coloring or oenological artifice respects the patina acquired over nearly four decades of aging. The result is a Bas-Armagnac that has reached a stage of maturity where aromatic depth expresses itself more through nuance than power.
The color takes on a deep amber hue, brightened by copper and light mahogany reflections. The nose gradually settles on candied plum, dried apricot, and orange peel, then reveals wax, fresh walnut, and dark honey. As the eau-de-vie aerates, notes of cocoa, cinnamon, blond tobacco, and old wood deepen the ensemble. The palate is supple from the attack, with a satin touch that the low natural strength makes particularly harmonious. Stewed fruits join roasted almond, mild coffee, and brown spices, while a discreet freshness preserves the length. The finish calmly returns to walnut, dried citrus, and a delicate rancio, without dryness or excessive warmth. Tasted alone after a few minutes in a tulip glass, this vintage can also accompany a Gascon croustade, a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate, or an aged Comté cheese.
