Armagnac Laterrade - Bas-Armagnac - 1984 - Domaine du Priou - Barrel Proof - 40%
Armagnacs Laterrade was built around a simple conviction: old Gascon eaux-de-vie must retain the name of the place, the memory of the vintage, and the personality of the barrel that shaped them. A trained sommelier, Vincent Laterrade has for many years traveled the properties of the region to find old batches that have remained in family cellars. This "treasure hunter" approach has allowed him to assemble a particularly extensive collection of vintages while forging lasting relationships with producers. Each parcel or vintage selection remains linked to an identified estate, without blending between different years. Domaine du Priou is located in Hontanx, in the Landes, at the heart of Bas-Armagnac, a sector known for its sandy-silty soils commonly called tawny sands. Under oceanic influence, this terroir generally produces eaux-de-vie sought after for the delicacy of their fruit, their suppleness, and their aptitude for long aging. Laterrade supports this identity without seeking to standardize it, favoring bottlings without coloring or oenological artifice.
This Bas-Armagnac comes exclusively from the 1984 harvest of Domaine du Priou, a property where the L’Huillier family has maintained a confidential production, managed with the same care once given to the neighboring Château de La Béroje. Distilled on the estate, the eau-de-vie has spent nearly four decades in French oak barrels before bottling. This prolonged time in wood allowed it to gradually lose some volume and alcohol content through natural evaporation, while developing the tertiary aromas characteristic of old armagnacs. Presented at 40%, this barrel proof has not been artificially reduced to its commercial strength by adding water. Nor is it the result of blending vintages intended to reproduce a consistent profile from year to year. The 1984 vintage thus remains fully readable, with nuances specific to its harvest, birthplace, and the unique evolution of the barrel. This fidelity to origin gives full meaning to a rare selection, produced in necessarily limited quantity.
The color presents a deep amber tone, animated with copper and light mahogany reflections. The nose gently opens on dried plum, candied quince, and orange peel before revealing wax, fresh walnut, and a fine smoky note. With aeration, the profile darkens around cocoa, blond tobacco, cinnamon, and old wood now perfectly integrated. The palate has a supple, almost satiny attack, then gradually gains depth without ever seeking power. Stewed fruits mingle with roasted almond, mild coffee, and brown spices, supported by a discreet freshness that prolongs the balance. The finish lingers on citrus zest, walnut, sandalwood, and a delicate rancio, with contained warmth. This vintage deserves to be tasted alone, after a few minutes in a tulip glass, but can also accompany a Gascon croustade, a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate, or an aged Comté cheese.
