Armagnac Laterrade - Bas-Armagnac - 1985 - Domaine de Lartigue - Barrel Proof - 40.7%
The Domaine de Lartigue belongs to this wine-growing Gascony where the production of Armagnac has long been passed down within families, alongside the work of the vineyard and the vine nursery. Established since the mid-20th century, the estate cultivates several traditional grape varieties of the region and maintains a privileged place for vintage eaux-de-vie. Its vineyard is located on the hills of Bas-Armagnac, a territory subject to oceanic influence and renowned for the aromatic finesse of its distillates. Vincent Laterrade selected this barrel as part of his selection work with Gascon producers, with the desire to preserve the identity of the estate rather than blend it into a house blend. A former sommelier, he approaches each batch by tasting, seeking the accuracy of the fruit, the quality of the texture, and the coherence of the aging. The vintages are bottled under the name of their original estate, without blending different years. This transparency allows Armagnac to be read as a testimony of a place and a harvest, patiently transformed by wood and time.
This eau-de-vie was distilled in 1985 at Domaine de Lartigue, then aged for thirty-eight years in French oak barrels. During this long rest, the alcohol slowly mellowed while the aromas from the wine concentrated and gained deeper nuances. The angel's share naturally brought the barrel down to 40.7%, the degree at which it was bottled without reduction. This particularly measured strength for a barrel proof therefore does not result from the addition of water, but from several decades of evaporation and exchanges with the atmosphere of the cellar. The 1985 vintage remains isolated, without blending with another harvest or seeking a standardized aromatic profile. The long maturation melted the oak imprint into the matter, allowing ripe fruits, soft spices, and the first hints of rancio to coexist. The whole promises a serene expression of Bas-Armagnac, where depth is built more on delicacy than strength.
The color reveals a deep amber with reflections of polished copper and light mahogany. The nose first has a delicate floral character, soon joined by prune, dried apricot, and candied orange peel. Aeration brings notes of fresh vanilla, wax, walnut, and blond tobacco, on a background of remarkably mellow old wood. The palate settles with roundness, in a velvety texture that accompanies the fruit without weighing it down. The stewed fruits extend towards roasted almond, soft cocoa, and cinnamon, while a slight liveliness maintains a precise line. The finish returns to the plum pit, citrus zest, and a discreet rancio, with contained warmth and a persistence full of nuances. This vintage will benefit from being tasted alone in a tulip glass, after a few minutes of aeration, or alongside a Gascon croustade, an apricot tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate, or an aged Comté cheese.
