Marchesi Antinori - Solaia 2003
At the heart of Chianti Classico, Solaia is born on the Tenuta Tignanello, one of the historic estates of the Antinori family. The eponymous vineyard covers about twenty hectares, between 350 and 400 meters altitude, with a southwest exposure particularly favorable to the ripening of cabernets. Its stony soils rich in alberese and galestro, two limestone formations characteristic of this part of Tuscany, provide drainage, depth and tension to the wines. Created in 1978, Solaia was initially made only from cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc before sangiovese gradually joined the blend. This association between Bordeaux varieties and the emblematic Tuscan variety shaped the identity of a wine that has become one of the great references of the region. The 2003 vintage falls in an exceptionally hot year, giving a particularly ripe and concentrated expression of the terroir. Despite this sunny context, the limestone structure of the vineyard helps preserve enough freshness to support the richness of the fruit.
Solaia 2003 blends 75% cabernet sauvignon, 20% sangiovese and 5% cabernet franc. Cabernet sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine with its depth, black fruits and tannic structure, while sangiovese brings more liveliness and a typically Tuscan dimension. Cabernet franc completes the ensemble with finer floral and spicy nuances. The warmth of the vintage favored significant ripeness of the grapes and a particularly generous expression of blackberry, blackcurrant and spices. The different grape varieties are vinified separately to respect their personality before the final blend. The oak aging then accompanies the natural concentration of the wine and gradually refines its tannins. After more than twenty years in bottle, the 2003 is now in a phase of full maturity where initial power and tertiary complexity meet.
The color today shows a deep garnet with the rim revealing ruby and slightly tile-like nuances. The bouquet opens on candied blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum, then develops notes of licorice, tobacco and cedar. Aeration gradually reveals fine leather, spices, undergrowth and balsamic nuances that bring relief to the sunny character of the vintage. The palate remains ample and generous, with now polished tannins that give the texture a particularly silky feel. Sangiovese brings a welcome freshness at the heart of the richness of cabernet sauvignon and helps maintain a nice dynamic until the finish. The persistence develops on evolved black fruits, tobacco, spices and a mineral touch, in a fully mature register today. Solaia 2003 will accompany a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, roasted pigeon, rack of lamb, game birds or refined cuisine around black truffle.
