LA CLOSERIE DE FOURTET 2018
Clos Fourtet is located in Saint-Emilion, in the Bordeaux region. It was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Emilion classification. Formerly called Camp Fourtet ("Small Fort"), it was designed to protect the city of Saint-Emilion in the Middle Ages. Winemaking at the property began in the 18th century. Clos Fourtet underwent several changes of owners during the 20th century before being bought by the Cuvelier family in 2001. The vineyard covers 20 hectares in one piece and is managed in a sustainable way with the use of organic treatments and biodynamic methods, not certified. The estate's soils are naturally fertilized by their cows and the ecosystem is strengthened by the presence of wild flowers and shrubs.
La Closerie de Fourtet is the second wine of Clos Fourtet. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested in whole berries and then transferred to the wine cellar, in small stainless steel vats, by gravity. Manual punching down is carried out so that the grape skins and seeds release aromas, tannins and color. The vatting lasts 25 to 30 days followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aging lasts 12 to 15 months in barrels, about 70% of which are new.
