SPRINGBANK - 10 ans - Local Barley - 55.6%
Springbank Distillery is one of only two remaining distilleries in the Campbeltown area on the Kintyre Peninsula in southwest Scotland. It produces Single Malt whiskies under three different labels in different styles; Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Springbank Distillers was founded in 1828 by Archibald and Hugh Mitchell, becoming the 14th licensed distillery in Campeltown - by 1934 only Springbank and Glen Scotia remained. It remains the property of the direct descendants of the founders. The distillery is one of the few in Scotland to do all of its production on site, including traditional barley malting and bottling. This process control helps the distillery manage three distinct styles, all influenced by the choice of cask and the local climate. Springbank's parent company, JA Mitchell & Sons, also reopened the Glengyle Distillery in 2004 where Single Malts are produced under the Kilkerran brand. The independent bottler Cadenhead's is also part of the group.
Springbank's versions use a blend of peat-dried and air-dried malts and are distilled two and a half times, compared to three times for Hazelburn and twice for Longrow.
The Local Barley Series is one of the most highly sought-after whisky from the Springbank Distillery. Initially planned to be a series of just five bottles, due to its popularity it is planned to be kept as part of the Springbank range as an annual limited release. Each year, different barley varieties are used, grown by different local farmers and up until now, was either matured fully in Bourbon or mainly Bourbon with some Sherry influence. This year, the team has chosen to bottle a 100% Sherry Matured edition. It is a 10-Year-Old, made from Belgravia Barley grown at Glencraigs Farm, located just 2.5 miles from the distillery on the A83. Limited edition of 8,500 bottles worldwide.
