Château du Cèdre - Cuvée le Cèdre 1998
Château du Cèdre is a family-run estate situated in Cahors, in southwestern France. The château takes its name from its centenary cedar tree. Léon Verhaeghe was born in the small town of Moorslede in the Flemish region of Belgium. When the First World War is declared in 1914 and the country is annexed, Léon is among the millions of Belgians who flee. He travels through France by bicycle and takes refuge in the Lot. Later, his son, Charles Verhaeghe, meets Marie-Thérèse Rives, whose family owns a traditional multi-crop farm in Vire-sur-Lot. The couple continue their multi-crop farming activities and plant their first hectare of vines alongside the lavender in 1958. In 1973, Charles and Marie Thérèse Verhaeghe carry out their first wine bottling, alongside their usual distillation of lavender. It is now owned by Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe, their sons. Pascal, trained in viticulture and winemaking at Jean-Marie Guffens and then in Napa Valley, and Jean-Marc graduated of La Tour Blanche in Sauternes. The domain is certified in organic farming.
Le Cèdre is made from Malbec whose age of the vines varies between 30 and 50 years. Vinification is carried out without inputs and vatting lasts 30 days. The wine is aged in foudre and barrel for 24 months.
Grape variety: 100% Malbec
