Greenock Creek - Casey's Block Shiraz 2019
Greenock Creek Wines is located between the towns of Seppeltsfield and Greenock in the Barossa Valley, in South Australia. Established in 1984 by Michael Waugh, Greenock Creek produces several wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, as well as a Grenache. The flagship wines are the Roennfeldt Road Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. All the wines are made from the estate's own fruit.
Casey’s Block is made from Shiraz from the Radford Road vineyard. The fruit was delivered quickly from the vineyard to the winery to avoid the heat of summer. The grapes were destemmed and transferred to open cement fermenters without crushing. Regular pump-overs maintained a consistent fermentation temperature of 20-22°C. Once fermentation was near complete, the must was separated from the skins into underground tanks, and the skins dug out by hand to a 3-tonne basket press for slow, gentle extraction. Free-run juice and pressings were combined in tank before transfer to American oak for 22 months. Low rainfall in the lead-up to the 2019 vintage resulted in low bunch numbers and small berries. The wines of this vintage are deeply coloured and possess bold and intense tannin structure that will allow long cellaring.
Grape variety: 100% Shiraz
