Château d'Esclans - Whispering Angel 2023
Château d'Esclans is located in La Motte in Provence, on elevated ground near the Gorges de Pennafort, in Provence . In 1201, Gérard De Villeneuve, member of a wealthy Marseille family, took possession of the castle and most of the area of the Esclans Valley which was ultimately sold in batches. Two brothers, Sauveur Louis Ranque and François Alexandre Ranque, were the next to own the castle, then known as Terre d'Esclans. In 1875, they sold the property to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille, who manufactured wooden matches near Marseille. In 1955, the Perraud family owned the property until 1994. At that time it was purchased by a Swedish pension fund which produced a small quantity of wine and the remaining grapes were sold to neighboring winemakers. Sacha Lichine acquired Château d'Esclans in 2006. Today, there are 140 hectares of vines on the 427 hectares of the property.
