Champagne Hélène Charbaut - La Crayère 2022
Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Hélène Charbaut is part of a generational renewal dynamic in Champagne, with a strong parcel-based approach and a desire to precisely reveal the identity of each terroir. After launching her own production in 2020, she now works approximately 3 hectares from the villages of Bisseuil, Aÿ, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, all classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Her philosophy is based on identity cuvées, each linked to a specific year and origin, with the exception of La Charbauterie. With La Crayère 2022, she offers a fine and committed reading of a specific terroir from Bisseuil, highlighting the purity of Chardonnay and the uniqueness of the soils. This confidential cuvée, produced in only 1,440 bottles, perfectly illustrates her demands and sensitivity as a winemaker. It fits into an artisanal approach where every detail counts, from the vine to the bottle.
La Crayère 2022 is made exclusively from Chardonnay coming from two parcels located in Bisseuil: Les Côtes, planted in 1963, and Les Rocheforts. These vines, facing due south, rest on clay-limestone soils that bring both richness and tension to the wine. The juices used come only from the cuvée, guaranteeing finesse and precision in aromatic expression. Vinification is carried out in 2.28 hl oak barrels, with aging on lees for ten months, allowing the development of complexity and texture. Faithful to a low-intervention approach, the wine is unfiltered, thus retaining all its substance and energy. This cuvée is offered as Brut Nature, with about 2 g/l residual sugar, providing a very pure reading of the terroir and vintage. Information regarding precise viticulture or possible sulfur use is not detailed and would deserve confirmation for a comprehensive sheet.
On tasting, La Crayère 2022 stands out with an elegant and sculpted profile, where Chardonnay expresses itself with clarity and depth. The nose may evoke ripe citrus, white fruits, accompanied by chalky and lightly toasted notes from barrel aging. The palate combines amplitude and tension, with a silky texture supported by a beautiful freshness that structures the whole. The fine bubbles underline the wine's precision, while the long and saline finish extends the mineral sensations. The absence of dosage enhances purity and uprightness, offering a champagne that is both vibrant and gastronomic. This cuvée pairs perfectly with noble fish, shellfish, or iodized and refined cuisine, and will seduce lovers of terroir champagnes that are precise and low-intervention.
