Château D'ARMAILHAC 2000
In Pauillac, Château d’Armailhac occupies a historic vineyard located on the Mouton plateau, in the immediate vicinity of Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Clerc Milon. Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has belonged to the Rothschild family since 1933 and benefits from a viticultural heritage closely linked to the great gravelly terroirs of the northern part of the appellation. The soils combine deep gravel, clay, and clay-limestone areas, offering Cabernet Sauvignon the necessary conditions to develop structure, freshness, and longevity. Merlot brings more roundness, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot traditionally complete the estate’s blend. D’Armailhac often has a personality more accessible in its youth than some great Pauillacs, without sacrificing the depth and tannic architecture characteristic of the appellation. The 2000 vintage, remarkable in Bordeaux, allowed for ripe and concentrated grapes in a balance particularly favorable for aging. More than twenty-five years after harvest, this wine is now in a phase where the Médoc structure has softened and tertiary aromas are increasingly prominent.
The 2000 harvest gives rise to a wine built around a dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, accompanied by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The different grape varieties play complementary roles here: Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, Merlot enriches the mid-palate, while the other two varieties enhance complexity and spicy nuances. Parcel vinification preserves the personality of the different terroirs before the final blending. Aging in French oak barrels then supports the wine’s structure and helps progressively refine the tannins. In the generous context of the 2000 vintage, this construction has given a deep and ripe material, supported by sufficient freshness to ensure slow evolution. Time has now largely softened the imprint of aging and mellowed the initial framework. A perfectly preserved bottle can still offer good holding, but the wine’s interest now mainly lies in the complexity acquired during its aging.
The color today shows a deep garnet evolving towards ruby and tile hues on the rim. The bouquet combines ripe blackcurrant, black plum, and evolved red fruits with notes of cedar, blond tobacco, and graphite. On aeration appear fine leather, undergrowth, licorice, and nuances of sweet spices, sometimes accompanied by a touch of truffle. The palate retains a beautiful structure, but the formerly firm tannins are now polished and provide a much silkier texture. The evolved fruit remains supported by Médoc freshness that maintains length and avoids heaviness. The finish prolongs notes of tobacco, blackcurrant, graphite, and fine wood in a now fully mature register. Château d’Armailhac 2000 will accompany roasted rack of lamb, pigeon with cep mushrooms, beef fillet, game birds, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
