Château LA LAGUNE - Magnum 2008
In Ludon-Médoc, at the gates of Margaux, Château La Lagune occupies one of the first great gravelly hills encountered when going up the Médoc from Bordeaux. Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate benefits from a terroir of light gravel mixed with silica, particularly favorable to the production of wines combining aromatic finesse, freshness, and aging potential. Since the arrival of the Frey family in the early 2000s, Caroline Frey has undertaken fundamental work in the vineyard to enhance plot precision and gradually evolve cultural practices towards viticulture more respectful of natural balances. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, accompanied by Merlot and a significant proportion of Petit Verdot, a grape that strongly contributes to La Lagune's spicy personality. The 2008 vintage belongs to a classic Bordeaux year, marked by slow ripening and a favorable late season that allowed harvesting particularly precise Cabernets. This natural freshness perfectly suits the estate's style, producing a wine less opulent than in very sunny years but endowed with beautiful definition. Presented in magnum, the 2008 now benefits from a slower and more regular evolution, particularly favorable to preserving its fruit and balance.
Château La Lagune 2008 blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon provides a straight framework, beautiful persistence, and a profile dominated by blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar. Merlot softens this structure and enriches the mid-palate, while Petit Verdot adds color, spices, and aromatic depth. The grapes are harvested and selected with precision before vinification aimed at preserving tannin finesse rather than seeking massive extraction. Aging in French oak barrels then supports the wine's structure and allows the different grape varieties to gradually gain cohesion. After nearly twenty years of evolution, the 2008 begins to develop a complex tertiary profile while retaining very present freshness. The magnum format slows aging, so this bottle still has a greater potential for evolution than a 75 cl bottle kept under comparable conditions.
The color shows a deep garnet with ruby reflections that are beginning to slightly evolve on the rim. The bouquet combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum with nuances of violet, cedar, and blond tobacco. With aeration, graphite, licorice, undergrowth, and peppery notes gradually appear, recalling the presence of Petit Verdot. The palate is elegant and structured, with now softened tannins but still sufficiently present to provide length. The fruit retains beautiful clarity, supported by freshness that perfectly balances the first nuances of fine leather, dry leaves, and spices. The finish is persistent and deeply Médoc, on blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and a discreet smoky touch. This magnum of Château La Lagune 2008 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
