In Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet occupies a vast terroir of deep gravel soils facing the Gironde estuary, in the immediate vicinity of several major crus of the appellation. Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has belonged to the Tesseron family since 1975 and has established itself, under the impetus of Alfred Tesseron, as one of the pioneers of a profoundly rethought viticulture in the Médoc. The vineyard mainly rests on gravelly ridges over clay and limestone horizons, a configuration particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon. From the 2000s, the property began a gradual conversion to biodynamics, accompanied by a return to soil work and a reduction in interventions. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, freshness, and great aging potential to the wine, while Merlot enriches the mid-palate with a softer texture. The 2008 vintage, marked by a demanding season followed by a remarkable late season, allowed slow ripening of the grapes and produced wines of great precision. After nearly twenty years of evolution, Pontet-Canet 2008 today expresses a particularly attractive balance between depth, freshness, and tertiary complexity.
Château Pontet-Canet 2008 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a straight and persistent structure, with a profile of blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar particularly characteristic of Pauillac. Merlot provides a more enveloping texture and helps to gradually soften the tannic structure. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are used in very limited proportions but enrich the whole with floral, spicy, and deeper nuances. The different parcels are vinified separately to respect their personality before composing the final blend. The aging process supports the material with precision and allows the fruit, tannins, and woody nuances to gradually integrate. The 2008 currently has a beautiful maturity, but its freshness and structure still allow several years of evolution under good conditions.
The color shows a deep garnet with ruby nuances that are beginning to slightly evolve at the rim. The nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum with notes of cedar, graphite, and violet. With aeration, blond tobacco, fine leather, licorice, and delicate undergrowth nuances gradually appear. The palate remains structured but the tannins are now largely softened, giving a more velvety and harmonious texture. The black fruit retains a beautiful presence, supported by freshness that prolongs the tasting and balances the initial tertiary expressions. The finish is long and deeply Médoc, on blackcurrant, graphite, spices, tobacco, and a discreet smoky touch. Château Pontet-Canet 2008 will accompany roasted rack of lamb, beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or refined cuisine centered around black truffle.
