If the name of Château Poujeaux appears for the first time in 1806, Terre de Poujeaux located in Moulis-en Médoc is known since the Middle Age as the fiefdom of Latour Saint Mambert, future Château Latour, 1st Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. During the nineteenth century, the estate produces its first wines and takes its real independence.
Divided in three entities, it took until the end of the 20th century and the perseverance of the Theil family for the Château Poujeaux to recover its structure and surface. This estate regains its historical composition in 1956, reuniting a property of 100 hectares including 70 hectares of vines. It is in 2008 that the family Cuvelier already owner of the famous Clos Fourtet, 1st Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion, bought the domain.
Perched on the superb gravel rumps of Grand Poujeaux, the vineyard of Château Poujeaux extends to the north-east of Moulis. Cabernets Sauvignons (50%) and Merlots (40%), the varietals of the Medoc are mixed with Petit Verdots (5%) and Cabernets Francs (5%). The perfect match between grape varieties and the nature of the soil gives birth to a deep wine where density and elegance echo each other.
Today Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne actively co-operate the Château Poujeaux with enthusiasm and determination to perpetuate and transmit the family spirit of Château Poujeaux. Involved and experienced, the teams in the vineyard and the winery enthusiastically follow the technical advice given by Stéphane Derenoncourt, consulting oenologist.
Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. The fermentation takes place in whole bunches with a gentle extraction and the aging lasts for 12 months in 30% of new barrels.
