Château SMITH HAUT LAFITTE 2014
In Martillac, at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Smith Haut Lafitte occupies a vast terroir of Günzian gravel whose drainage capacity promotes deep rooting of the vine. Owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard since 1990, this Grand Cru Classé of Graves has undergone a profound transformation based on viticultural precision, parcel selection, and a constant search for terroir expression. The estate notably has its own nursery and an integrated cooperage, two tools that reflect its concern to control every step of the winemaking process. Cabernet Sauvignon plays a central role in the reds, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The gravelly soils give the wines a characteristic mineral and smoky framework, while the more clayey horizons help maintain a regular water supply. In 2014, after a relatively cool summer, a long Indian summer in September and October allowed the grapes to gradually reach full maturity. The vintage is thus distinguished by a particularly successful combination of depth, energy, and freshness.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2014 blends 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Harvesting extended until October 18, allowing each parcel to be picked at its optimal maturity level. Whole berries are vinified in small thermoregulated wooden vats around 28°C, with extraction carried out notably by manual pigeage. This approach aims to progressively build the tannic structure while preserving aromatic brightness. Aging lasts eighteen months on lees in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, partly made in the château’s cooperage. Limited racking helps preserve the wine’s texture and depth during this period. After more than ten years of evolution, the 2014 is beginning to soften its initial structure while retaining sufficient reserve to continue developing in the cellar.
The color remains deep, with dark garnet and ruby hues. The bouquet combines blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and black cherry with notes of pepper, licorice, and fine spices. Aeration gradually brings out nuances of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and gunflint, an emblematic profile of great Graves reds. On the palate, the body is dense without being massive, supported by acidity that adds tension to the whole. The tannins have gradually polished and now offer a smoother texture, while the fruit retains beautiful clarity. The finish is long, slightly smoky and spicy, with a return of blackcurrant, licorice, and persistent minerality. Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2014 will accompany a rib steak, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon with porcini mushrooms, venison fillet, or dishes featuring black truffle.
