Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2005
On the slopes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Émilion, Château Tertre Roteboeuf occupies a confidential vineyard of about six hectares shaped by François Mitjavile. The property is distinguished by a natural amphitheater with marked slopes, exposed in a way that favors a particularly slow and advanced ripening of the grapes. The clay-limestone soils play an essential role in the balance of the wine, bringing freshness and tension to a generally generous expression of merlot. François Mitjavile has been developing a very personal approach to viticulture for several decades, notably favoring a large leaf surface, controlled yields, and generally late harvests. His goal is not to seek power for its own sake, but to achieve complete aromatic maturity while retaining enough freshness to support the wine. Tertre Roteboeuf has thus built a unique identity among the great Saint-Émilion wines, with voluptuous textures, complex bouquets, and great aging potential. The 2005 vintage offers a particularly favorable ground for this philosophy, combining exceptional maturity, depth, and structure.
Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2005 blends 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. The merlot brings to the wine its deep substance, generous black fruit, and the enveloping texture characteristic of the estate, while the cabernet franc contributes freshness and aromatic relief. The ripeness of the grapes is precisely sought, with harvests occurring when the skins, seeds, and pulp have reached the desired balance. The vinification favors measured intervention to translate the natural richness of the grape without artificially building power. The prolonged aging in new barrels is an important component of Tertre Roteboeuf's style, with the wood gradually integrated into the particularly dense substance of the wine. The great 2005 vintage gave considerable structure, supported by ripe tannins and fruit of remarkable intensity. After more than twenty years of evolution, this architecture begins to blend into a complex expression while still showing significant aging potential.
The color retains a deep garnet hue, with more evolved ruby nuances gradually appearing on the rim. The bouquet is particularly expressive, mixing blackberry, black plum, and candied cherry with notes of violet, licorice, and sweet spices. Aeration reveals cocoa, cedar, tobacco, truffle, and balsamic nuances that testify to the vintage's evolution. The palate remains ample and sensual, with a dense substance whose tannins have gradually softened to offer a velvety touch. The ripe fruit maintains a beautiful presence, balanced by the freshness of the limestone terroir and the more vertical nuances of the cabernet franc. The finish is long and enveloping, on black fruits, bitter chocolate, spices, and fine notes of undergrowth. Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2005 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, royal hare, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
