Domaine Cassagne et Vitailles - Les Chausmes Montpeyroux 2022
Domaine Cassagne & Vitailles, founded by Matthieu Cassagne and Rodolphe Vitailles, has established itself as one of the leading estates of the new generation of Languedoc winemakers. Nestled in Montpeyroux, in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac, the estate produces precise and ambitious signature wines. Each single-plot cuvée is designed as a faithful reflection of the terroir that gave rise to it, with a strict focus on respectful cultivation, low yields, and artisanal winemaking. This approach has quickly established Cassagne & Vitailles as one of the leading names in the South of France.
The Chausmes terroir is distinguished by its stony clay-limestone soils and its exposure, which benefits from both Mediterranean sunshine and the cool nighttime temperatures associated with the altitude. This plot allows Carignan, the historic grape variety of Languedoc, to express all its depth and uniqueness. In the 2022 vintage, marked by a sunny but balanced climate, the Carignan produced grapes of remarkable aromatic intensity, complemented by the suppleness of Grenache and the finesse of Syrah. The result: a concentrated, elegant red, carried by a mineral freshness that characterizes the great wines of Montpeyroux.
The intense garnet color with purple highlights reflects a beautiful maturity. The nose, expressive and refined, reveals aromas of ripe black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, plum), enhanced by notes of sweet spices, garrigue and licorice. On the palate, the attack is ample and velvety, with firm but already melted tannins. The structure is deep and powerful, balanced by a mineral tension that brings elegance and freshness. The finish, long and persistent, stretches on spicy and slightly stony accents, confirming the nobility of the terroir and the aging potential of this cuvée.
Grape varieties: Carignan (majority), supplemented by Grenache and Syrah
