Domaine Guy Bocard - Bourgogne Côte d'Or - Chardonnay 2023
In the heart of Meursault, Domaine Guy Bocard belongs to those Burgundian estates whose history was built long before the modern recognition of appellations. The Bocard family has been cultivating vines since the 1920s, and then Guy Bocard developed the estate from 1976, on rue de Mazeray, affirming a deeply Meursault identity. Since the takeover by the Derichebourg family and the support of Philippe Pacalet, the property has embarked on a new chapter marked by increased attention to living things, long pressings, indigenous yeasts, and a more measured use of sulfur. The estate has been managed organically since the conversion began in 2019, with soil work, the abandonment of herbicides, and a clear will to preserve the longevity of the plant material. This Bourgogne Côte d'Or Chardonnay 2023 fits into this dynamic: a regional appellation wine, but coming from a Meursault environment, with an ambition and structure that far exceed the simple category of an entry-level white. It carries the generosity of the Côte de Beaune while maintaining that chalky tension and precision that give the best Burgundian Chardonnays their length. It reflects the current spirit of Guy Bocard, between family heritage, terroir reading, and the search for a full-bodied but never heavy white.
This cuvée is made from Chardonnay grapes coming from several parcels located on the Meursault terroir: Les Durots, Les Basses Gouttes, and Les Grandes Coutures. These parcels, exposed southeast at about 230 meters altitude, rest on clay-limestone soils that bring volume, tension, and a discreet mineral sensation to the wine. The estate's technical sheet indicates aging in French oak barrels for twelve months on fine lees, with about 20% new barrels. This choice gives the wine a serious foundation, deeper matter, and oak that should accompany the fruit without overpowering it. The 2023 vintage, generous and bright in Burgundy, finds here a particularly pleasant expression of Chardonnay, with white fruit, a hazelnut touch, and a mouth sufficiently structured to hold up at the table. Recent tastings also highlight the increasing precision of this cuvée, with a profile nourished by white fruits, chestnut, and a salivating relief. This Bourgogne Côte d'Or thus has the appearance of a true estate wine, conceived with the same care as the house's more prestigious appellations.
The color presents itself in a pale and luminous gold, with beautiful visual clarity. The nose evokes white peach, ripe pear, candied lemon, and yellow apple, then opens onto nuances of almond, fresh hazelnut, light honey, and blond bread. On the palate, the wine shows a full-bodied texture, almost buttery, but balanced by freshness that prolongs the tasting and avoids any heaviness. Barrel aging brings structure, a slight patina, and discreet depth without masking the Chardonnay's brightness. The finish returns to ripe citrus, white fruits, and a fine bitterness of citrus peel, with a chalky sensation that gives it firmness. This white will pair very well with seared scallops, a noble fish in a light sauce, seafood, creamy poultry, mushroom risotto, pike quenelles, or cheeses such as brie, Mont d'Or, and Comté. Served around 11 to 13°C, in a fairly large glass, it will gain volume after a few minutes of aeration and can evolve favorably over several years.
