Jean Baptiste Souillard - Saint Joseph 2023
Based in the northern Rhône Valley, Jean-Baptiste Souillard has established himself as a leading producer of remarkably precise micro-cuvées. He works with Syrah in an almost Burgundian style, employing gentle extractions, long aging, and minimal oak influence. His approach aims for wines that are straightforward, elegant, and vibrant, where freshness and drinkability take precedence over showy power.
Saint Joseph 2023 comes from hillside vineyards on granitic and sandy soils, which impart energy, verticality, and elegance to the Syrah. The harvest is done by hand, with a large proportion of whole bunches to accentuate the floral and spicy notes. Fermentation is slow, using only indigenous yeasts, and the wine is then aged in barrels that have held several vintages to refine the texture without masking the fruit.
On the nose, pure notes of violet, fresh black fruit, raspberry, and black pepper are revealed, complemented by a very subtle smoky touch. On the palate, the wine is juicy and elegant, supported by fine, precise tannins that envelop crisp, slightly spicy fruit. The long, mouthwatering finish blends notes of graphite, dried herbs, and black berries, leaving an impression of great digestibility. At the table, this 2023 Saint Joseph pairs perfectly with roast poultry, veal, herb-roasted lamb, refined bistro cuisine, or vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms and roasted vegetables.
