Occidental - Freestone Occidental - Pinot Noir 2023
Occidental is the personal project of Steve Kistler, an iconic figure of Californian Pinot Noir, founded with the ambition to produce wines of pure expression from the coolest areas of the Sonoma Coast. The Freestone Occidental vineyard is located at the extreme west of Sonoma County, in immediate proximity to the Pacific Ocean, in an area marked by persistent fog, low temperatures, and a long ripening season. The vines are planted on poor soils of marine and sedimentary origin, rich in clays and schists, which naturally promote concentration and finesse. This extreme coastal situation imposes low yields and demanding viticulture. The cool climate gives the Pinot Noir remarkable tension and precision, far from the sunnier expressions of the inland areas. Freestone Occidental thus embodies one of the most accomplished interpretations of the Occidental style.
The 2023 Freestone Occidental Pinot Noir stands out for its deep and nuanced aromatics, blending black cherry, wild raspberry, and cranberry with notes of undergrowth, fine spices, and wet stone. The palate is slender and structured, supported by a vibrant natural acidity that stretches the material with elegance. The tannins are fine, tight, and perfectly integrated, giving the wine a great sensation of purity and precision. The texture is silky, almost airy, while retaining true depth. The barrel aging is mastered with great discretion, supporting the wine without ever dominating the expression of fruit or terroir. The whole offers a very faithful reading of the cool climate and maritime soils of Freestone.
The 2023 vintage confirms the aging potential and stylistic consistency of this cuvée, which gains complexity over time. At the table, this Pinot Noir ideally accompanies refined white meats, roasted poultry, or dishes with delicate and earthy flavors. Its finesse and length make it a gastronomic wine, but also a pure tasting wine for demanding enthusiasts. Freestone Occidental stands out for its restraint, precision, and natural elegance. It never seeks to show off but favors balance and depth. A major cuvée to understand the most accomplished expression of cool climate Pinot Noir on the Sonoma Coast.
